If you're new to Wordutopia, I figured you might find these tips useful in developing your understanding of the application. Hopefully Students will soon be enriching this discussion board with brilliant tips of their own so be sure to stop by now and again for updates.
1. I strongly recommend downloading WebWord dictionary, as mentioned in the tutorials section, certainly for those who have a slow internet connection.
2. Always remember the HINT feature serves 2 purposes. The first is obvious, but you need to also keep in mind the REVERSE TESTING section. So when creating a HINT for a word, read it in terms of only being shown the definition, and amend the hint accordingly. I like to add something like: "this word begins with..." or "ends with..." Try it and see how you get on.
3. Once your skipped list contains a dozen or so words or questions, go straight into your SKIPPED LIST section and revise each word listed, instead of using the standard random testing method found on the Main User Panel page. That way you'll be homing in on weak vocabulary words quicker and in an ongoing basis.
4. Search for a word in the SHARE ONLINE section BEFORE sharing it from your own personalised database. That way you'll avoid creating duplicate entries.
5. If you press the HINT button and nothing appears, click on the EDIT button rather than being persistent with the HINT button. As you will no doubt discover, you'll have forgotten to populate the HINT field in the first place.
6. If any screen seems distorted at any time, press F5 on your keyboard. This refreshes the page.
7. Never EVER let your pride get in the way of your discipline for conducting formal tests (don't stick to the Main User panel method all the time). Remember, this is your PRIVATE account, no one will ever see your results. After all, isn't the purpose of this application to improve your command of English vocabulary?
8. In the EXAMS testing section, you'll be asked to confirm each of your answers - even though a timer is in operation. Don't panic when you see this or feel like you're cheating, you're not. You'll already have made your answer, you're merely scoring it in real time.
9. If you're a student improving your command of a language other than English, try adapting the application in the exact same way. If that proves a little too difficult, then try just capturing the main NOUN in the DEFINITION FIELD, and filling out the rest of the fields in your native language.
10. Finally for now, if you think of ways to improve this application, be sure to contact the makers via the CONTACT US link on the HOME page. If it's as good as you say, they'd be daft not to take it onboard.
